Our Mission Statement

To provide non-competitive outdoor activities all year round for the LGBT community; foster healthy and enriching activities and encourage a sense of community; and encourage an appreciation and respect for the natural world.

We're a fun, inclusive and friendly club that's been around since 1980! Everyone is welcome.

There are many different and varied outings organized each year.

Some examples of outings are:

  • Hiking in the Hudson Highlands
  • Bike riding on Long Island
  • Boating on the Hackensack River
  • Visiting the Museum of Modern Art
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Canoeing in the Adirondacks
  • Camping in the Catskills

What are some special advantages that Sundance offers over other venues?

We’re all volunteers:
No one gets paid for anything they do in Sundance. Instead, we develop skills, confidence, and broaden our horizons by filling the club's calendar with a wide variety of outings for all endurance levels, from easy to advanced.

We’re a full service organization:
Leaders are well organized and plan everything for their outing, from recommending equipment to helping to arrange carpools, to planning the trip.

Sundance provides trip deposits and support for needed for outing leaders (e.g. for outfitter costs).

We have a club-like camaraderie:
Sundance is friendly! Over time, as you attend more outings, you’ll meet and get to know other members. Many life-long friendships and relationships started in Sundance.

We strive for consistency and reliability in our outings:
Outing leaders are encouraged to describe events accurately so other members can decide whether or not to participate. We have a lot of experience in handling unforeseen events that come up on outings (these are documented in our member/ leadership handbook.)

We're incorporated with the State of New York:

As a result, we adhere to NYS’ laws governing not-for-profit corporations, such as holding elections and maintaining financial records, and maintaining a fully staffed Board of Directors.
